“The best week of the year,” as Delfi Brea recently described it. Padel’s return to Argentina carries a different weight. This is not just another stop on the calendar, but the sport’s emotional epicentre, where passion in the stands elevates every match. Last year, Buenos Aires set the record for the highest attendance ever at a padel match. Here, the game is not only played, it is lived.
That sense of anticipation began to build from the very first day of the Buenos Aires Premier Padel P1 main draw. Tuesday’s action already delivered a demanding round that tested even the most in-form pairs and set the tone for a week where no match will come easy.
One of the standout storylines came from Juani De Pascual and Alonso Rodríguez, one of the breakout pairs of the Asunción Premier Padel P2 after their run from qualifying to the quarter-finals. Back on Argentine soil, they were forced to dig deep once again, battling through a three-set opener that featured a second-set tiebreak before sealing a hard-earned 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory. A reminder that their rise is no longer a surprise, but something they are now expected to back up.
On Center Court, experience met youth in one of the most symbolic clashes of the day. Víctor Ruiz and Sanyo Gutiérrez overcame Contreras and his partner in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), but the result told only part of the story. Contreras, competing as the second-youngest player ever to debut in Premier Padel, showed flashes of the talent that marks him as one to watch, holding his own on one of the biggest stages of the sport.
In the women’s draw, the day closed with a major upset. Julieta Bidahorria and Marta Caparrós knocked out Vero Virseda and Marina Guinart on their tournament debut, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, in one of the most dramatic matches of the day. Earlier, Alejandra Salazar and Alejandra Alonso de Villa were also pushed to the limit, but unlike Guinart and Virseda, they came through their three-set battle, defeating Laura Luján and Catarina Nogueira to secure their place in the next round.
Elsewhere, the day followed a clear pattern: long matches and fine margins. Juan Cruz Belluati and Nachi Sager came through one of the toughest encounters, defeating Facu López and Franco Dal Bianco 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 after nearly three hours. Similarly, Álvaro Cepero and Miguel Benítez had to weather momentum swings to overcome Juan Pablo Dametto and Felipe Calleja 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
Attention now turns to Wednesday, when the tournament will shift gears with the debut of the top seeds. Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto, Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas, as well as Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger are all set to step onto court, raising the level and expectations in Buenos Aires.
After a first day shaped by resistance and emotion, the stage is set for the arrival of the tour’s biggest names in a city where padel always feels bigger.
